Our Philosophy
The faculty and staff recognizes the importance of educating the
whole child. By modeling Christian attitudes and values, the school
community fosters spiritual, intellectual and emotional growth as
well as a concern for physical well-being. Through this process,
the children of St. Leo the Great school will develop a better understanding
of themselves, their world and their God. It is hoped that they
will effect a positive, societal change in order to bring about
a just and peaceful world.
Our Mission
The mission of St. Leo the Great School is to create a Catholic
environment and an academic atmosphere in which parents are recognized
as the primary educators of their children. We encourage parents,
faculty and staff to foster a love of learning, self-confidence,
and a sense of responsibility, and to help the students discover
and use their God-given potential.
Goals
Intellectual Goals
We believe it is essential that our students are given the tools
to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
- Students acquire language and computational skills according
to their potential.
- Students develop critical thinking skills so they can draw conclusions,
evaluate and develop decision-making skills.
- Students experience the beauty of our cultural diversity and
heritage through literature, music and art.
- Students develop a love of learning and the motivation to discover
more about themselves and the world in which we live.
- Students develop an understanding of computers in order to access
information and the rapid changes in technology.
Social and Psychological Goals

- Every person is created by God with a personal dignity. We nurture
in our students an appreciation for and an acceptance of the individual
and for society.
- The school provides a caring, culturally diverse environment
in which students demonstrate a sense of community and are able
to develop a positive self-image.
- The school community teaches the leadership and social skills
necessary to live a life of responsible citizenship.
- The faculty and staff models and offers opportunities for students
to be responsible and self-motivated.
Religious Goals
We believe it is important for children to develop moral values
together with a deeper knowledge and love of God. It is our goal
to provide for our students:

- Knowledge of the Good News, the message of the Gospel and person
of God.
- Knowledge of Catholic worship, prayer and the example of a
prayerful attitude toward life.
- A Christian community where they can share in the sacramental
life of Christ and recognize their self worth as children of God.
- A religious instruction program which includes Catholic doctrine,
study of the sacraments and family life education.
- A sense of responsibility to the greater community through works
of service and prayerful response to the call for peace and justice
in the world.
- A school-wide Second Step program, which teaches skills in empathy,
impulse control, and anger management.
Physical Goals

- To foster a reverence for life, we instruct students in the
development of positive attitudes toward physical well-being and
personal health.
- Physical education
classes focusing on fitness, coordination, and sportsmanship for
Grades 3-8 meet twice a week.
- A motor-perception program is held for Grades K-2 twice a week.
- A substance abuse program is taught in Grade 5.
- An after-school sports
program for Grades 5-8 reinforces sportsmanship and fair play.
